Dear Diary:

I’m so glad everything is over. It is very quiet right now. Quieter than usual. Well that is because just about everyone has flown the coup. We literally do not have any Watchers at all in the neighborhood. After the face off with the Children of the Moon, the Watchers decided it was time for a vacation. And they weren’t the only ones; a good chunk of our family left too. Literally, the ones left are Jasper, Alice, Esme, and I.

Amy and Peter went to Nova Scotia to visit friends for a while. John, Maria, and Michelle—who is doing much better, save the scar—went to Oklahoma. They have volunteered for the American Red Cross previously and they joined again to help out all of those poor people affected by the tornadoes in the last couple of days. They have sent back photos of the utter devastation. It makes me so sad that things like Mother Nature could take everything away, even someone’s very life. So I’m really glad they went to help. Our whole family donated close to $250,000 for the cleanup effort. Since money isn’t an object, it was the least we could do. From what Amy told us before she left, they donated approximately the same.

Corin, Seth, Keith, Leah, and Jacob went to La Push. The first four to introduce their imprints to the rest of the council and wolves; while Jacob went to see his father. Edward, Bella, and Nessie went to Forks to visit Charlie. That way Jacob and Nessie wouldn’t be too far away from each other and Edward could keep an eye out on them. Rose and Emmett went to Northern Canada for a romantic getaway. Only Alexander and Rogue left the actual continent. They decided to go home; as in to Greece. They haven’t been back in a long time and after everything Rogue had been through, it only seemed natural to take her to her most comfortable surroundings. Besides, having been to Greece myself, I knew how beautiful and romantic it was. I had a feeling Alexander just wanted some quiet time alone with his wife. And who could blame him?

Meanwhile, we finally found out something about the Watchers that was very basic though we didn’t know except for Amy, Peter, Alexander, and Rogue and that was their last names. Something so trivial we had no clue! Corin’s was Pilikos, Keith’s was Clark, and Michelle and her parents were the Borelli clan. So now we had Alexander and Rogue Melanides, Peter and Amy (nee Sotos) Bailey, Corin Pilikos, Keith Clark, and John, Maria and Michelle Borelli. It was just a nice thing to know for our own private thoughts.

Jasper and Alice were holed up in their room while Alice planned her renewal of vows. She came out of the room only when she had questions for Esme. Meanwhile, other than writing in this diary, I have been studying some of my journals on supernatural illnesses. I had added the whole Children of the Moon episode in there. I hope that I can talk to Rogue and the others more at length about it. The more we know of those monsters the better. I know there aren’t that many of them out there, but better safe than sorry. And hey, being a doctor, I love new information! Jacob calls Jasper and I, nerds. Because we play chess and read a lot. Wouldn’t hurt him to read a book now and then.

As I was finishing up writing that last sentence, Esme walked into my office with a huge smile. She was holding a fancy envelope in her hand. Before I could ask, she said:

“We just received an invitation in the mail.”

“An invitation?”

“A wedding invitation actually.”

“Really? Whose?” I arched an eyebrow. I knew Alice and Jasper weren’t done planning and they wouldn’t send it through the mail anyways. Esme gave me the invitation to read for myself. I looked at it and it said:

The entire Cullen clan is cordially invited to the wedding of

Kate

&

Garrett

To celebrate our union and love

On this day of the 25th of May 2013

At 8:00pm

At our house in Denali, Alaska

Please RSVP ASAP

I was stunned. Alice and Jasper came into the room just then and looked over my shoulder at the invitation. They both smiled and nodded their approval. Alice was the first to speak:

“Oh yay! Kate and Garrett are sooooooooooooooooooooo cute together! He’s so rugged and handsome and she’s our little blond firecracker! I’m going to call her now and accept. I assume we’re all going?” She looked at all of us without really asking. We still nodded.

“Ooooooo I want to know what her dress and everything looks like!!” She squealed before running out of the room and to her phone as we all laughed after her. Jasper followed her shaking his head the whole way.

I pulled Esme into my lap and we both looked at the invitation. It was written on simple white paper. We both knew that if it was Alice planning that wedding, she would have probably had some crazy 3D paper or something.

“I’m guessing the others can get back in time. Well Edward and the others can just come from Forks. I’m incredibly happy for both of them.” I said.

“So am I. Everyone is slowly being married off it seems. It’s a nice thing to come after such a hard time for us all.” Esme said thoughtfully. She was right. Enough drama. Time to celebrate.

I just sat there holding my beautiful wife and smiling at this new development. The next time I write to you all, I will tell you all about Kate and Garrett’s wedding. I’m sure Alice will be helping with that entry!

Dear diary,

Looking back on the events that went down earlier, I think Mark and his mate could have received a more appropriate welcome from the Cullens. Rosalie and Alice had had to restrain their squeals at the sight of the human woman’s belly, all their animosity forgotten in the expectation of possible gurgling sounds and piercing cries of a newborn. Emmett and Jasper had, on the other hand, relaxed very little.

“This is Katherine, my wife,” Mark announced after the initial wave of shock and surprise had passed. “Are you Carlisle Cullen?”

I looked to Emmett and Jasper, and with their nod, turned to Mark. “No, but I am his son, Edward. Carlisle is on his way here. This is Emmett and Jasper, and their mates Rosalie and Alice, respectively. That wolf is Jacob. He’s a brother too.” I introduced everyone to him, and he seemed to relax further.

“Okay, can you please call off your . . . Can you please call off Jacob? He’s scaring her.” Mark pointed to Jacob, who, as if on cue, nodded and walked off into the forest to phase back into his human form.

“How long until Carlisle gets here?” Mark asked once he had affirmed that Jacob was not going to be phasing again.

“A few minutes.” I nodded, “Please, come in.”

We moved around to let Mark and Katherine pass, and I noticed the way she was cradling her belly. My guess was that she had decided to keep the baby, much like Bella had, and Mark had had no option but to go with it.

Esme and Nessie, having heard the commotion, were already standing and pacing in the living room, but their anxiety turned to wonder when they saw our new guests.

“Oh my . . .” Esme gasped when she caught sight of the man, and I knew instantly what she was thinking. As for Nessie, let’s just say that she was about to take fan-girling to a whole new level.

“Esme, Nessie, this is Mark and his wife, Katherine. Mark, Katherine, this is Esme, my mother and Carlisle’s mate, and Renesmee, my daughter.” Once again, I made the introductions.

I had pretty much been expecting the surprised glance from Mark when he heard who Nessie was, and the realization of the truth of the statement when he registered her scent. It would have set me on edge had it not been for his golden eyes.

“You’re her father? Her biological father?” He asked me, and I saw Katherine eye Nessie apprehensively at his question.

“Yes. I’m her biological father.” I nodded and smiled. I had been once where he was now, so I knew he needed the reassurance.

“Where . . . Where is her mother? Your mate?” He asked next, glancing furtively at Katherine.

“Well, we’ve landed ourselves in a bit of a pickle, if I may put it like that. My wife Bella, as of today, left for Forks, the town where you just came from. It’s her birthplace. She is visiting to solve a few matters that arose unexpectedly.” I nodded and explained as tangentially as I could.

“You mean . . . she’s alive? She’s well?” the hopes on Mark’s face were hard not to notice.

“Well, as well as can be for a vampire.” I nodded.

“She’s a vampire?”

“Yes. She was turned shortly after she gave birth to our daughter.”

“Oh, okay.” The lines in Mark’s forehead faded slightly, and he sighed in relief and exhaustion.

That seemed to spring the family into action.

“Oh, dear! Where are my manners? Come on! Sit down, sit.” Esme sprung into Hostess mode, and everybody hovered in the main area with our guests.

“Do you want anything, darling? Something to eat or drink?” Esme asked Katherine, who looked at Mark before saying, “Just a little water, please.”

“Of course.” With that, my mother, ever the generous hostess, slipped toward the kitchen.

I should have expected the next question at some point, but it was still embarrassing to hear my daughter say what our minds were obviously thinking, “Has anybody ever told you that you look a lot like—”

“Tom Hanks?” Mark smirked slightly, and I thought Alice swooned behind me. “Yeah. A lot, actually.”

Beside Mark, Katherine let out a small giggle, the first sound that we heard her make since she arrived.

Esme arrived with Katherine’s water after a few seconds, as well as cookies and brownies. Leave it to Esme to make her guests happy.

There was silence for some time after that, as the only sounds in the room were the gulping down of water and a small swish as Jacob arrived after getting dressed, standing guard behind Nessie. I noticed Mark give him a cautionary glance and then grimace. The smell was too much for him perhaps.

“So . . . how far along are you?” Alice piped up, clearly having never have heard of wrong questions.

“Uh . . . well, I only discovered it three days ago, but . . . it seems to progress faster than . . . normal ones, the pregnancy, I mean, not the baby.” Katherine hesitated through her entire speech, and the lines on Mark’s forehead reappeared.

Nobody had a chance to explain any further as we all heard the sound of a car halting in front of the house, and in the next moment, Carlisle appeared in the doorway, still clad in his light blue shirt, dark pants and white coat.

If I had thought Nessie’s reaction had made Mark uncomfortable, that was nothing compared to what Carlisle did.

“Edward, what is happening? I smelled a vampire in the doorway . . . what—HOLY HELL, WHAT THE FUCK IS TOM HANKS DOING IN MY HOUSE?!”

I saw Katherine jump a little, and I was sure my family’s mouths were hanging open.

“I loved Philadelphia. Touched my heart man,” Carlisle, I kid you not, actually put his hand on his heart and sighed, and I was almost one hundred percent sure that Mark was thinking of bolting out of here the first chance he got.

“Carlisle, that’s not . . . he’s not Tom Hanks.” Jasper put his hand on Carlisle shoulder, fighting a grin like all of us. Who knew Carlisle had a dude crush on Tom Hanks?

The excitement faded away from Carlisle’s face like a grin disappears from the face of a three year old who has just been told that Santa isn’t real.

“He’s not?” Thank God vampires couldn’t cry. I wasn’t sure how much of that I could have handled, especially from Carlisle.

“Uh . . . no,” Mark could not have looked more flustered. “I’m Mark Wellington. This is my wife, Katherine.”

Carlisle’s expression pretty much resembled that of a school girl’s who had been given an opportunity to talk to her crush but had screwed it up. He would have blushed fifty shades of red if he could.

“Oh . . . Well, this is awkward.” He chuckled nervously. “My sincerest apologies to you. I . . . I’ve always been somewhat of a fanatic.”

“No kidding,” Rose jested, and Alice nudged her in agreement.

“It’s all good. But, that’s not why we’re here.” Mark stood up and shook Carlisle’s hand, who noticed Katherine only then.

Almost immediately, Carlisle’s gaze went to Katherine’s bump, and a small, surprised smile graced his lips as he shot me a knowing glance.

“And what do we have here?” Carlisle took off his coat and sat down in front of the couple, who, to be honest, were looking like deer caught in headlights.

“Uh . . . well, I . . . we were hoping you would . . . say something.” Mark said.

“I will, but I need to know some things first.” He snapped into his fatherly mode immediately.

“We figured as much.” Mark nodded, “Katherine and I, we met in London. I am a psychiatrist by profession—”

“Like Hannibal Lecter.” Emmett sniggered, and earned a warning glance from Esme.

“Well, sort of. She says that a lot, actually,” Mark smiled weakly, “but as you can see, I don’t . . .” he gave Katherine an uneasy glance, “hunt people. Well, not until the past hundred years. I have to say, you are quite popular among the . . . vegetarians . . . they hail you as the Father of the Vegetarian Movement . . . well, in a way.

“I heard of you when I was passing through Italy in about 1903. Um . . . some members of the Volturi had been talking about you and your “different” lifestyle. They said that you had been practicing medicine for quite some time then. I tried it out of curiosity, and fortunately, it sat well with me.

“Katherine was one of my patients.” I heard the ladies say a silent ‘Aw’, “I had never heard of any kind of relationship between a vampire and a human until then, other than the customary predator-prey one. I always thought we were the only ones, Katherine and I.

“We got married three weeks ago.” Mark sighed. “I honestly didn’t know this could happen. I mean, logic says so. Just . . . I had no idea what to do, when she told me that she was . . .is pregnant.

“So, I started researching, asking people, reading, looking. My friend, Alastair, told me that he’d seen the same thing happen with you people about four years ago. He told me that there was a hybrid living with you. He didn’t know much, but it was enough. Apparently, the Volturi is very ticked off by you and your coven. Alastair told me he had been with you for some time when you were congregating everyone to fight the Volturi. He told me to go to Forks, but when I got there, the shape shifters told me that you had moved to Atlin.”

“I am still wondering why Sam sent you here and didn’t tell me.” Jacob mused at the last part of the speech.

“It seemed they were dealing with some matters of their own. I only got there in the early hours of the morning today. It looks like someone found out about you: a human,” Mark explained, but did not question any further, even if he might have been tempted to.

Of course, Sam and the pack must have been busy calming Charlie down. Whatever Mark had told us, however little it may be, served as an indication that Bella was going to have a hard time dealing with Charlie.

“You said the Volturi were talking about Carlisle when you heard about him. May I ask if you’re, in any way, associated with them?” Jasper was the one to voice out our obvious concern. Things would take a whole new turn if Mark had any, even remote connections to the Volturi.

“Do you think I would be here if I did? The Volturi would have annihilated me a long time ago if they would have found out about mine and Katherine’s relationship, especially that Caius. I don’t even know how they think of themselves as royalty. Who gave them the authority?” Mark clearly looked agitated at the mention of the scum, but unfortunately, with our usual tools rendered useless, we had still no way to confirm if he was lying or not.

“I’m sorry if I come across as blunt, but it seems that your powers as a vampire negate all other powers in your vicinity. I mean to say that none of our powers are working with you. I am telepathic, and I rely on my mind to tell whether people have ulterior motives, but my powers have not been useful since you arrived. I can’t read your mind, or anybody else’s for that matter.” I saw Carlisle look at me in confusion, and then shock as he realized that I had never heard what he had probably been trying to tell me all this time through his mind.

An expression of curiosity, and then embarrassment passed over Mark’s face, “Oh, that . . . that would not be me. That’s Katherine.”

I was sure I heard somebody gasp, but could not tell who it was with my preoccupation of this latest revelation.

“Your wife has a shield?” Again, Jasper voiced out the question.

“I wouldn’t call it so much a shield as an antidote. I couldn’t believe it at first: a human with that strong a power. But it’s true. I, you should know, am a shape shifter. But I found out soon enough that none of mine or my acquaintances’ powers work if Katherine is anywhere near them in a two mile radius.” Mark explained, and I saw his hand grip Katherine’s waist protectively, and I knew the exact reason as to why. It was a shock that the Volturi didn’t know of her . . . yet.

“That strong?” Esme was, clearly, surprised.

“Yes.” Mark sighed, “It’s one of the reasons why I never joined a coven. No matter how innocent and unaffected they claim to be, the temptation of power is very persuasive.”

“You must have a really hard time keeping the Volturi off of your backs.” Rose said.

“We keep moving, now more than ever, but we have to be careful.”

There was again silence in the room as the information seeped in. Mark was the first one to break it.

“Carlisle, I’ve come a long way. I love her. That’s all I have to say for myself. And I need your help, Carlisle. Will you? Will you help us?”

Carlisle’s features softened immensely at Mark’s words, and I knew that whatever he was thinking had to involve our guests in our future.

“Of course, Mark. You needn’t ask me any more. You’ve come to us for help. And you’re going through some place that we’ve already seen. That practically makes you family.” Our hearts warmed with Carlisle’s demeanor. That man was a saint.

Mark’s grin seemed like it would split his face into two, whereas Katherine looked a little shy, but grateful nonetheless. Come whatever may, they were clearly grateful to have help.

“All right then, Katherine, dear, are you craving anything yet?” Carlisle smiled at the woman, and she blushed profusely.

Mark chuckled at her reaction. “We stopped at every Pizza spot on our way here. She’s been eating pizzas as if they’re evanescent.”

I saw Jacob’s face light up like a Christmas tree when he heard that.

“Okay, then, pizza it is!” Esme declared, and in the next second, Katherine was surrounded by the ladies in the house, asking what else she craved and what her favorite color was.

We had no premonition whatsoever that this simple arrival would set off a chain reaction of surprises in our lives. We had no idea that the events to come would make some of us test loyalties, drive some of us to the point of madness, and break others to the point of exhaustion. They would bring happiness and despondence all at once. But, how could we tell? The future, after all, is not set in stone, no matter how good of a psychic we might have in our family.

Therefore, for the moment, we enjoyed the company of our new and eternal friends.

Unaware and unprepared.

Edward

Dear Diary,

“Bag?”

“Yeah.”

“Tickets?”

“Yep.”

“Lenses?”

“Yes, Edward, I have everything.”

She reassured me for the thousandth time, but I could see the trepidation in her eyes as she chewed on her lip in a very famous human gesture.

“Bella.” I put my palm on her cheek, and she leaned in to my touch.

I let her take the lead, because I knew she needed it after what had gone down yesterday.

“It feels wrong,” she sighed after a long time of remaining quiet. “I mean, I shouldn’t have to justify to him who I do and don’t love.”

It had been quiet for a long time after the moment Charlie had stormed out of the house in a raging inferno.

Then, the fear had set in.

There were decisions to make, arguments to be had, defenses to be put forward. Whether or not, to be or not to be: those were the questions. Charlie had taken with him not only the shock of a lifetime, but a grave knowledge of the innermost secrets of our world, thus rendering himself a liability. Our secrets were no longer hidden under the shroud of pretense and distance, but had been exposed to the unlikeliest of persons in the most delicate of predicaments.

God help us if the Volturi found out.

Because the matter pertained to me and Bella, the family had, although with resistance, left us alone to deal with it. After a long talk, and confessions of our fears of exposure, Bella had decided to go to Forks and explain to Charlie the gravity of the situation on home ground, maybe even enlist the help of Billy Black and the tribe if necessary.

The only part I hadn’t agreed to in our discussion was her decision to go alone.

It had been Carlisle who had later assured me that my presence there would only have exacerbated the situation, given Charlie’s reaction towards me on the day of the party.

“Trust me, Edward, you don’t want yourself there if you want Charlie to listen,” he had said.

I had agreed eventually, and so we were here, in the driveway of our house, trying to forestall the pending judgement by only a few minutes.

“Bella, I understand what you’re saying. But it was only natural for him to freak out, love. We bombarded him with something that he had never expected in his life.” I brushed a stray lock of her that had settled itself on her cheek.

“I know, Edward. I mean, I would probably have done the same had I been in his shoes. But he shouldn’t have judged you.” She shook her head, wrapping her arms around me.

“Put yourself in his shoes again, Bella. What would you think if you find out that the guy your daughter loves, the guy she married had been a vampire all along? Don’t tell me you wouldn’t go where he went. Don’t tell me that you wouldn’t for a minute think that he might have used, or coerced your daughter into thinking that she loved him so he could feed on her for the rest of her life?”

She pulled back and looked at me with an angry expression, put off with the fact that I would dare think so low of myself, but even I could see the wheels turning in her mind.

“Well, anything sounds immoral if you say it like that!” She finally groaned in defeat.

I chuckled lightly, and kissed her forehead, “I know, Bella. But that’s what is logical. I mean, just because your sense of self-preservation is lower than Jacob’s brain cell count doesn’t mean every one else’s is.”

Hey! What the hell?! Jacob internally shouted at me, and I could hear Emmett snigger.

“Don’t say that!” Bella smacked my arm, “he defended us!”

“Thank you,” Jacob called out from inside the house.

“I know, love, I’m sorry.” I grinned.

Bella kissed me one last time on the cheek, and then stepped out of the confines of my arms.

“I should get going.” she looked anywhere but me as she spoke.

“Hey, Bella, look at me.” I held her face and made her look into my eyes. “Everything will be all right. Okay?”

Bella stared at me for a long time, and then sighed heavily, “Okay.”

I kissed her on her cheek and opened the door of the car, “Call me when you get there.”

“I will.” She got in and strapped her seat belt around her, and I smiled amusingly. Only Bella could be a vampire and observe traffic safety rules at the same time.

I watched her drive away from where I stood, and soon enough, the car disappeared from my sight towards its destination of the rainy town of Forks, Washington.

*************

“Hey.” I knocked on her door. “Can I come in?”

“Yeah.”

She was lying in her bed in her room, which couldn’t have been further from the room of a teenager her age. It was painted in muted tones of blue and white, decorated with artifacts and photographs, serving as reminders of travels all over the world. I caught sight of one which had been taken in Paris, her trip overseas with Carlisle and Esme shortly after the departure of the Volturi.

The small, quilt clad bump in the middle of the bed told me that she had been lying here for quite some time with her thoughts. It was times like these when I saw the true resemblance between Bella and Nessie. Both had an incessant habit of self deprecation. I had a feeling where our future conversation was going to go.

“Hey.” I walked up to her bed and settled in with her, putting my arms around her horizontal figure.

“Hi,” she mumbled softly. I saw her thoughts dwell on Bella.

“Mom’s gonna be all right, honey.” I sighed.

“I know.” Her voice was still meek, her thoughts playing the events of last night over and over.

“I’m sorry about your birthday.” I kissed her head, and she cuddled me like she always did when she was having a bad day.

“It’s okay.”

“Guess I never got around to giving you your second gift, did I?” I smiled.

“It’s okay. I found him already.” She giggled as remembered last night alone in the cottage, catching her “gift” raiding our fridge.

“He found Jacob’s steak? Jacob’s gonna kill him.” I grinned.

“Hey, no hurting my cat!” She smacked me in the chest, and as if on cue, said cat strolled into her room in the next moment like it owned the place.

Now, I love my daughter, and I love my wife, but this time, they made a less than suitable choice when it came to a pet. I get it, he was cute and furry and had a little round bum and all, but for some reason that eluded me, he seemed to hate me with a passion. Not just me, but it hated every male in the house except Carlisle (apparently he had charmed it with his more than kind and generous self). Every time it was in my vicinity, it turned into Furry Vengeance Returns, which was kind of suitable what with his shiny black fur and eyes like little oranges.

Kitty Galore (one of the many names that I had come up with for the demon) took one look at me and hissed, then strolled around the bed, avoiding me like the plague, and jumped up and perched on Nessie’s left side, away from me, all the while giving me the stink eye. I knew it sensed something wrong with me, and I felt like telling him that if he kept this up, he could end up being dinner.

“Are you naming him?” I grimaced at the feline.

“I already did. I’m gonna call him Poseidon.” Leave it to my daughter to name her cat after Greek Gods.

“Darling, I think a better name would be Satan.”

“Dad!” She shrieked playfully, and I laughed while Satan curled up to her.

The conversation in the room ceased for sometime as she scratched Satan’s ears and he purred, and her thoughts scattered themselves all around the world. I brushed her hair absentmindedly while keeping an eye on the demon in her lap, wondering what it would be like to read the mind of an animal.

“Was it my fault?” Nessie suddenly asked. Her eyes were downcast, and her hands had occupied themselves with brushing her pet.

“No, honey, it was not your fault.” I hugged her, showering her with kisses. Why would she even go there?

“But if I had not been here, if I had never been born, then Grandpa wouldn’t have found out. He would just have believed that you were both getting some beauty treatment or something. He wouldn’t have kicked us out of his life.” She shook her head, mulling over Charlie’s reaction, and horror filled me.

“Renesmee, look at me,” I urged, and she complied. “It was not your fault, okay? I want you to remember that. It was not your fault. It was nobody’s fault. He just caught us in a bad time. He would have found out eventually, but yesterday, that happened in a very unpredictable way.

“Don’t ever think about a life where we don’t have you. Your mother and I love you. It was a hard time—your mother’s pregnancy—but the end result was more than fulfilling. We got you out of it, and we’ve never, ever regretted the events of our life. Some of them, maybe, but they didn’t involve you. You’re our blessing, Renesmee. How can you doubt that? and seriously, ‘beauty treatment’?”

She laughed and then grew solemn as she went over my words for a minute, and then spoke again. “But every time things seem to go right, we find ourselves in some situation, Dad. Remember the Volturi, Dad? They came here because of me. Aunt Irina died because of me. I can never seem to do anything right by anyone, Dad.”

“Renesmee! That is absurd! How can you say that? After all the love we feel for you?” I explained, “The Volturi are power hungry, unscrupulous, deceiving, conniving hags, darling. They would have come either way, because they cannot bear to see a coven joined together in mutual harmony and love. They lust after talent, Renesmee, and we have an abundance of it. That is all they care about. Irina’s misguided conception only served as an excuse for them. They couldn’t have harmed you. We wouldn’t have let that happen.

“As for Irina, her death was a misfortune: one that we all regret. It was pitiful to see her being sacrificed at Caius’ false altar of morality just to coax a reaction out of us. She was misguided, blinded by her love for the wrong man, and her hatred towards the wrong coven. Had she met you, I’m sure she would have loved you as we all do. We couldn’t have helped her. It was not your fault, honey.

“And even though you lost a friend, you gained many all over the world. Do you not remember Zafrina, Senna, and of course, Tanya, Kate, Carmen and Eleazar? Ben and Maggie? Siobhan? They all love you, Nessie. You’ve not done anything wrong, darling. It’s not your fault.”

There were hot tears streaming down Nessie’s cheeks by the time I finished speaking, and I pulled her into a fatherly embrace, soothing her tumultuous thoughts.

The rest of my family—save for Carlisle, who was at the hospital—smiled at our exchange. Their hearts brimmed with the same love that I was trying to convince my daughter of.

Nessie cried for a long time, letting out a day’s worth of emotions suppressed, and I held her, because that was what she needed me to do: be a dad.

“Thank you for loving me so much, Daddy,” she said at last, wiping her red rimmed eyes, and I smiled under the weight of happy tears. She didn’t need to tell me that. No matter what, I would always love her that way.

She calmed down after a few moments, resting her head on my shoulder while I rubbed her back. Satan had witnessed the entire episode from afar, but was now curling up on her lap, behaving as if I was non existent.

Tell me how you and Mom met, Dad. She thought after a minute.

“Hasn’t Alice already told you the 1960s, overly dramatic, glossed up version, which I’m pretty sure is bedecked with songs by Taylor Swift?” I grinned.

Alice stuck her tongue out at me. Shut up

Yeah, and Uncle Emmett wears leotards in that one. She giggled.

“Oh, that would be a sight.” I laughed.

But I want to—

“I’m sorry, what, honey?” I asked, brushing her hair.

I waited for her to say something, but all I heard was silence.

“Nessie? I can’t hear you unless you’re thinking.” I chuckled, and that got a reaction out of her.

She pulled back from my embrace, and looked at me curiously. She then frowned, as if she was concentrating hard.

“Nessie, what is it?” I creased my brow at her strange behavior.

“You can’t hear, Edward. You can’t hear any one of us. We’ve been calling you for minutes.” Alice peeped into the doorway, panic stark on her face.

“No, I’m pretty sure I—”

“Hear this,” she interrupted me, and frowned.

Nothing.

I concentrated harder, yet I could not hear her, even as she was standing not ten feet away from me. That was when the true meaning of her words dawned on me.

It was absolutely silent. I couldn’t hear a single thought.

“Alice, what—?” I started to say, but Nessie interrupted me.

“Dad, can you see this?” she put her hand on my cheek.

Nothing.

My eyes grew wide as I realized that all I could see was my daughter in front of me: no vision, no memory, nothing that she had penetrated my mind with.

Apparently, Nessie realized that in the same instant, as she scrambled off the bed, nearly giving Satan a heart attack, and ran off towards Alice.

“Aunt Alice, see this.”

She repeated the whole process again, and once again, shock and fear registered on our faces when Alice announced that she could not see what Nessie was showing her.

“What the hell?” This was Jasper.

“Let me guess: you just stopped getting vibes from us?” Alice nodded, much to Jasper’s dismay, “Because I stopped seeing all of you about ten minutes ago.”

It took only a millisecond for us to spring into action and congregate in the living room. Everyone had a thousand questions on their minds, not that I could hear them, but I was pretty sure they ran on the same frequency.

What the hell is going on?

“Alice, what . . . How can we just . . . lose our powers?” I paced fro left to right, while Nessie sat on the sofa.

“We can’t be sure if you’ve lost them, Edward,” Esme comforted all of us from her place beside Nessie.

“Well, what is it, then? I mean, we can’t just turn them off with a click!” Alice looked close to bursting. She concentrated every two minutes, somehow hoping that the vision of a distant person would pop up and put her out of her misery.

“We should call—” Rose started to suggest, but was cut off with a hum that we all heard.

Even from a distance, we could tell it was a vehicle: a car, to be precise, speeding towards our house.

And by the time it screeched to a halt in our driveway, and we heard the telltale sound of the door being slammed shut, we had no doubt as to who, or rather, what it was.

A vampire.

“I’ll take this,” I heard Jacob say, and before we could react, Jacob had ran out the door and phased.

I instructed Renesmee to stay inside with Nessie as we sprinted forward to face a possible threat, while telling Esme to call Carlisle, soon.

The scene in our front yard was something that we had all been expecting. Jacob was snarling and pacing in a few feet from our porch, his movements effectively blocking the intruder’s advance towards our house, and our view of him or her.

“Jacob, wait!” I called out, and the wolf stopped, but I could see the hair on his back standing in attention, signalling that he had not let his guard down.

My eyes widened when I saw the man in our yard.

“Is that . . .?” I heard Jasper say.

“NO . . .” Emmett.

“Holy shit.” Rosalie, of course.

“I come in peace!” the vampire in our yard held his palms up, “Call him off, your wolf!”

His words earned him a snarl from Jacob.

At that moment, I forgot what he looked like and stepped forward.

“Jacob . . .” I tried to placate him, and then turned to the stranger, “Who are you?”

“My name is Mark Wellington. I am looking for Carlisle Cullen. I was told he lives here.” He took in all of us, and spoke slowly.

I was sure he noticed the surprise and doubt on our faces when he mentioned Carlisle. I looked at my family, and I didn’t need telepathy to know what they were thinking.

“Who told you about him?” I asked him next, as Jacob sat down on his haunches, his gaze locked on the newcomer.

“Alastair,” Mark nodded, “Alastair told me I would find him in Forks. But the shape shifters in Forks told me I would find him here, that he and his family had moved.”

Again, our expressions must have registered shock. If he had been to Forks, it meant that Sam had told him of our whereabouts. Why would Sam send him to us without warning us first?

“What do you want with Carlisle?” I got to my question, and Mark relaxed a little.

“Are you him? Are you Carlisle Cullen?” he asked.

“I asked you what you want with him.” I wasn’t giving out any answers until I got some of my own.

My words registered with Mark as he started backing up towards his car, slowly, until he stood in front of the passenger door.

“Just listen to me before you react.” He held his palm up, but we stood our guard.

Slowly, he opened the passenger door, and held out his hand to someone. The breeze flowing through the forest wafted towards us from them, and we knew who it was.

He had a human with him.

That the person with him was a female I could make out as she alighted from the car. What we hadn’t prepared ourselves for was the slight bulge on her belly and she turned to face us, holding on tight to Mark’s hand.

“I ask you again: are you Carlisle Cullen?” Mark held her close to him, as if he would hide her within him if he could, “I need his help.”

Well, that changed things.

Dear Diary:

Holy mother of……! I….we…..didn’t have any words to what we were seeing. Rogue, it was obvious, was livid. Nothing else could explain what had just happened. Not to mention the shaking earth and the howling winds. She was manipulating the elements in ways, I never thought was possible. She wasn’t looking at anyone at first, and then her eyes locked with Amy. Neither said a word but continued to look at each other. However, after spending a lot of time with the Watchers, we knew they were communicating. Rogue never uttered a sound. When Amy finally looked away, we all looked to her for guidance. She finally spoke when the wind died down a bit and the ground stopped shaking. Rogue was still levitating.

“We have to get Michelle back to your house Carlisle ASAP! Rogue thinks the Children of the Moon will be back. The one that attacked Michelle went to get the rest of his pack. We need to stand our ground there.” Amy said. Corin and the other Watchers nodded. They’ve dealt with these things before.

“How in the hell will we stand our ground to these things?” Emmett asked.

“How many of them are there?” Bella asked.

“14 or 15.” Corin said.

“14 or 15?????? We’re outnumbered!!!!” Nessie spoke up fearfully. Alexander looked at Rogue, then walked over to Nessie and put his hand on her shoulder and said:

“Well, actually the Cullen family will be outside on the porch while Michelle is lying down and hidden from view. The other Watchers and I except Rogue will form a semi-circle in front of the porch steps.”

“Wait a minute…..what about Rogue? Why are we hiding? We aren’t afraid of these things!! We can take them!” Jacob scoffed. The Watchers smiled at him.

“Rogue will be the only one fighting them.” Alexander answered.

“WHAT????? No way! That’s not happening!” Edward countered.

“Actually that’s the only way it’s happening.” Rogue spoke for the first time. Her voice didn’t sound the same. But the tone was not one to be argued with. The other Watchers agreed.

“Ok enough standing around, we have to get Michelle back to the house NOW!” Keith said.

With that, he scooped up an almost unconscious Michelle and flew into the air. It’s at that point that we realized Rogue had disappeared as did the other Watchers. We, meanwhile, started running. Even though we were all confused, the Watchers were almost methodical in their movements; it’s as if this was an exercise done many times over. I still wanted very much to know how we were going to treat Michelle. I was totally lost. Even flying at top speed, the Watchers heard all of our thoughts. Mine were answered by Amy.

“Don’t worry Carlisle. We know how to take care of her. It’s not going to be the best looking method. But you’ll see what I mean. You just have to trust us.”

Trust was never the problem. As a doctor, not being able to help someone in a medical crisis, especially a supernatural one, left me feeling inadequate. What the heck was I good for if I couldn’t even take care of a young girl bitten by a crazy, supernatural wolf?! I shook my head and concentrated a bit more on where I was going. Finally, we entered our backyard. The Watchers were already on the porch with Michelle. Esme flew into the house to get something for Michelle to lie on. She came out with a bunch of pillows, a few blankets, and a sleeping bag. Once that was down on the porch, Keith gently lowered Michelle unto it. She was shivering and covered up with blankets. Nessie was sitting next to her, holding one hand while her mother was holding the other.

Her father was sitting and looked like he was praying. We all watched helplessly. Then we heard a strange noise and looked out onto the backyard. The Watcher’s except Rogue had formed the horseshoe Alexander had spoken of around the porch and were looking toward the yard portion. Rogue floated down onto the ground. Everyone was facing a certain direction, the sounds of the forest…..changed. We were about to come face to face with an ancient enemy. No one could have prepared us for what they looked like (photos of the whole battle are below).

One by one the Children of the Moon emerged from the forest. Compared to them, the Quileute wolves looked like fuzzy little fury stuffed animals. These beasts were straight out of your worst nightmares or as Jacob would later describe it “even my nightmares would have nightmares of those things!” Massively large, gray and even red in color, with red or black eyes. They looked like they could move on two legs as well as four. I counted 15 of them total. There was one that walked in the front. He must have been their leader even though they didn’t seem to pay that much attention to him. Unlike the Quileute wolves, these wolves didn’t have a pack, they did what each wanted. They didn’t follow the rules of anyone. The reason they were here altogether, was for a chance to tear Michelle to shreds. And that was something no one was going to allow.

Especially, from the looks of it, Rogue.

When they came to a stop a little ways away, they looked at all of us and Rogue with what we could tell was complete and utter arrogance.

“They think this will be a piece of cake. They have no idea who or what they’re up against. We wouldn’t have let Rogue go alone if we didn’t think she would decimate them.”

Amy telepathically told all of us. We all looked at each other. Then at the Watchers; though none of them as much as blinked, I could tell they were very much anticipating what was about to happen. We though, couldn’t have prepared or imagined the next few moments. It’s even hard to describe here. I will do my absolute best. When it was all said and done, I as well as the rest of my family finally realized the full extent of the Watchers’ powers…..especially Rogue’s. We also understood why she was the leader.

But I digress. The beasts stared at Rogue as much as she stared at them. She gave nothing away. Then they started to growl. Finally, the biggest one and the rest of them sent forth a growl so frightening; I know if I was on that field I would have thought twice about facing off against them. However, no one was prepared for what we heard next. Rogue’s voice boomed back out at them at such a high volume that it wasn’t a voice but a roar of cataclysmic proportions; even our house shook! We were all stunned. The Watchers now started to smile a little. The beasts actually all took a step back. They looked at each other a bit nervously. This wasn’t going to be as easy as they thought.

In a blur, one of the beasts flew at Rogue. He didn’t get very far. She literally caught this massive thing in her hands and without what looked like much effort at all, ripped its head from its body. She then tossed the body aside but pitched the decapitated head back at the remaining beasts with such force, that it threw 3 of them back into the forest with enough strength to break 5 trees upon impact. It sounded like a bomb went off in the woods! Only one emerged from the forest and even it was looking lopsided. The other two were found later in separate pieces themselves, from the force of the decapitated head striking them.

Suddenly, the wind picked up again and we all looked up at the clouds. It was obvious something serious was brewing. The beasts were bracing themselves against the vicious wind. Rogue lifted her left arm into the air toward the heavens and her right one straight out in the direction of the beasts. Just then a massive lightning bolt came down, it struck her left hand, illuminated her completely, it then shot out of her right hand and caught 5 of the beasts. With what must have been 100,000 volts of electricity if not more, all that remained of those beasts were super charged ashes!

She wasn’t finished. She looked around with those orange eyes of hers and they landed on one particularly hideous beast. They narrowed. It was squirming under her red hot gaze and tried to move backwards but found that it couldn’t move at all. She had paralyzed it in its tracks. Once that was done, she turned her attention to the remaining monsters. It was obvious to us all that she was saving that one for something later.

Just then she flew into the air and started to spin; slow at first but then faster and faster as she kept going higher and higher into the clouds above. As she spun the clouds started to spin with her and then around her until she was completely obscured. But what she had created was a vortex that started to come down toward the ground. We realized we were looking at a funnel cloud of a tornado!

“Holy shit!” Jacob muttered aghast.

Those were the only words anyone was able to utter the entire time as we were watching the most unimaginable and unbelievable things happen. The Watchers who were still standing at closed ranks in front of us continued to maintain their composure and weren’t the least bit ruffled by the wind. This didn’t surprise them in the least. They just waited for the funnel to hit the ground and when it did, even a human being would be able to tell that wasn’t normal. It hit the ground with such force that the ground literally cracked under it. Tornadoes don’t crack the ground but just lift dirt and dust into the air. But this one hit the ground like a fist punching sand. Our backyard was turning into a war zone before our eyes.

The funnel was spinning and it seemed to have a direction. Hell it had an aim and its aim was toward those beasts, who were all so stunned by what they were seeing, they didn’t have time to run. As it lifted each monster into its vortex, they disappeared inside of it. When they were spit back out, they were in two pieces. First came the body, then the head. Until all remaining beasts were piled in a direct heap at the end of backyard. Their headless corpses didn’t look any less dangerous or horrifying then when the heads were attached.

At that point the funnel cloud started to dissipate until we saw Rogue again standing on the ground where the tornado was just moments earlier. She stood there for a brief moment then focused on the one monster she left standing paralyzed; now more by fear then the fact that she put the whammy on him. She started to approach it. As she did two things appeared out of nowhere in her hands. In her right hand, there appeared what looked like a very ancient looking dagger. It was very shiny which meant it was incredibly sharp and it had a beautiful black handle. In her left hand, there appeared to be an equally ancient looking black cup. It looked like it was made out of metal or iron.

She stopped right in front of it. It was almost taller than her. They were looking at each other eye to eye. It could have just moved its head a little bit and eaten her with its massive jaws. But everything looked different. Rogue was in charge and this large monstrosity was looking very scared. Then for the first time since this whole thing began she spoke:

“You and your pack of monsters have come here to kill and destroy. You have bitten one of my underlings. I and I alone decides who lives and who dies, as well as how they die. You are an abomination upon this earth! A living supernatural nightmare. You may have been made many eons ago. But it is I who is the oldest of all supernatural beings! I AM A GOD! You are a mere servant in the land of giants! And today you will serve me! You will serve me with your blood and your life! For it is only your blood that can save the one you have hurt. Now bow your head, animal, and take the punishment you so righteously deserve!”

And it did! It bowed its head. As she spoke, its eyes got really wide. I think it figured out who she was. Even the Children of the Moon know who Rogue is! The way she was speaking, I felt like I was in Ancient Greece. It definitely wasn’t a modern way of speaking. Made me wonder for a moment if all those myths about Zeus and Mt. Olympus were real. Corin heard my thoughts, smiled and winked. I raised an eyebrow and she just smiled knowingly. Oh boy! Just exactly where were they from? They said Ancient Greece….but suddenly I felt like certain strange pieces were falling into place. Edward’s throat clearing got me back to the present as I refocused on what Rogue was doing.

Using the dagger, she stabbed the beast with surprising ease and efficiency in the neck. The blood started to flow. She stood there for a moment, and then dipped the cup she was holding into the blood, letting it fill. After that she walked away from the beast. She was actually going to let it bleed to death! That was its punishment. It was going to really suffer for biting Michelle. She raised the cup of blood into the air almost above her head. Suddenly, another lightning bolt came down and struck the cup. Amazingly, it didn’t destroy it. She then lowered the cup again.

Just then Amy stepped forward for the first time. Rogue stretched out her arms toward Amy and the other did vice versa. Rogue then levitated the cup out of her own hands and it floated across the lawn into Amy’s hands. As soon as Amy had her hands around the cup, she turned around walked swiftly back toward us. As soon as she got to the porch, we let her pass and she made a beeline straight for where Michelle was lying down. Michelle looked incredibly pale. Without saying anything, Amy went down on her knees still holding the cup. She then put her left arm under Michelle’s head and lifted it up a little. She brought the cup to her lips. Michelle moaned. Amy whispered to Michelle:

“Come on honey, you have to drink this. It’s medicine. It’ll make you feel better.”

Even we, vampires who survive on blood, were slightly gagging at the thought of what she was about to drink! But if what Amy said was true and we had no reason to believe she’d make Michelle drink it if it wasn’t going to work, then hey why not? Medicine is medicine. It differs around the world in every culture. And this wasn’t exactly your normal case of an injury. So you had to go with what you had. As a doctor I understood that and gulped down my revulsion. I nodded encouragement at Amy who had heard my thoughts and looked up. She smiled a bit and then continued to try to get Michelle to drink the blood. Nessie—who I couldn’t have been more proud of at that moment—also shook off her obvious urge to throw up to help Amy prop up Michelle’s head. She was going to do anything she could for her best friend!

Michelle finally stirred enough to drink from the cup. Amy made sure she drank the entire thing. Then they lay her back down. Nessie covered her again with a blanket and lay down on the porch beside her. The rest of us, who could anyways, had tears in our eyes. The Watchers were looking prideful but still focused. We turned our attention back to the scene unfolding in the backyard. It wasn’t over yet. Rogue had watched long enough to make sure Michelle had drank the entire thing than turned her attention back to the monsters strewn around the backyard.

The beast she bled was lying on the ground by now taking its last breaths as she looked at it. When its heart finally stopped beating and she knew it was dead, she lifted one hand and with a wave, made his body fly into the pile of decapitated beasts. When she was satisfied, she brought her hands together and in them a massive fireball was created. It was bigger than the 6 that took out the Volturi! She then flung it at the pile and it exploded into a giant wall of flame. She stood there watching it burn into oblivion. The Watchers all breathed a sigh of relief. Now it was really over.

Alexander detached himself from us and walked across the field to his wife who still looked like a demonic warrior in her leather suit, shitkickers, trench coat, and those eerily orange-reddish eyes. When he reached her, he said:

“Come back to me, sweetheart. Please. It’s over. Michelle will be alright. I love you. Please come back to me. I can’t live without you.”

She turned around and looked at him. Stared at him actually. I don’t know how he could keep eye contact with that hellish stare of hers but he did it with ease. As they stared at each other and we watched them, we were all astonished to see her eyes start to shift……to change. Very slowly, her eyes changed. Then she closed them briefly and when she opened them again, they were that incredibly crystal blue color we were so used to by now and missed ever since this whole ordeal began!

Our Rogue was back!!

Then she smiled. Before she could say anything, Alexander wrapped his arms around her and spun her around. Then he kissed her……..for a long, long time. As they kissed, we started cheering. When he stopped, they didn’t say anything but walked hand in hand across the field back to the porch. Amy and Corin both hugged her. But her eyes were on Michelle, who by now had regained a lot of her color and was even trying to talk. She was still incredibly weak from all the blood loss. And there was the matter of her actual wound. But Rogue was kneeling next to her in seconds. She had taken off the trench coat by then. She reached her hands and put them over Michelle’s wound without touching her or it. Suddenly, bright yellow light started to emanate from her hands. It resembled the glow that Charlie and Sue had when they were chosen.

Right before our eyes, Michelle’s massive wound started to heal. In a matter of moments, nothing remained of the exposed flesh other than a scar in the shape of the jaws that bit her. Sadly, that is one thing that Rogue couldn’t make disappear. But somehow, I doubted Michelle cared that much about it; she wasn’t a vain girl. As long as she was alive and healthy, that was the most important thing. At that point she was able to sit up. Her parents hugged Rogue and thanked her over and over again. Then John lifted up his daughter and with a round of hugs, they flew to their own house. At that point everyone started to disperse.

Rogue and Alexander were next to leave. She still hadn’t said anything. Alexander did all the talking as they walked away. Just before leaving, Rogue took a look at the backyard which was now in shambles including Esme’s garden and bent down to the ground. Her eyes narrowed, she touched the ground, and the whole backyard lit up like a light bulb. We couldn’t see anything. But when the light faded, we were stunned to see that our backyard was back to the way it was before the battle happened. You wouldn’t be able to say anything happened there at all! Then the two of them walked back to their own home but not before she turned toward all of us, smiled, winked, and blew us all a kiss before continuing onward to their house.

We just continued looking after them stunned. Bella was the one who spoke first:

“Wow. I think we should call her, Rogue Warrior Princess from now on!”

“You mean instead of Xena?” Nessie asked. It was one of her favorite shows.

“Yep. Xena has nothing on her! Holy crow! I still can’t wrap my mind around what happened here. Can any of you?” We all shook our heads.

“I think Rogue Warrior Goddess is more appropriate.” Corin said with a laugh. Then the rest of Watchers flew off to their houses along with Peter who was being carried by Amy. We later heard a wonderful love song wafting from Rogue and Alexander’s house. Peter told us it was from the show “Lord of the Dance.” (Link is below)

Hmmmm…….Rogue Warrior Goddess…….has a nice ring to it………what do you all think?

I paced through the trees waiting for Sam to return, it had been almost an hour now! I still wasn’t sure how I felt about him. He obviously was not giving up his pursuit to win me over. He was nice enough but he was Leah’s boyfriend and he had just dumped her when he saw me. He didn’t even break up with her; just left her alone after she saw us together. Sometimes, he could be so sweet and I can’t imagine ever being with someone else. Other times…I missed Leah and knew what she would be thinking of us; then I hated him for what he’d done. Part of me wished that he would return to her, but the other part just wanted to forget it, and love him back. I knew I was falling more and more in love with him and further and further away from Leah every day. Maybe it was time for me to put my foot down before my heart got broken too…

He bought a house ‘for us . . . ‘ he’d said, ‘or just you,’ he quickly added when he saw my expression. He let me move in and stayed in his old house but frequently came to visit with or without an invitation. I had fun cooking for him and his friends who always gave tons of help on how to make everything taste better and ate as much as a herd of elephants.

And then there was his secret. Not just his, but the tribe’s. It seemed like more and more people found out nearly every week.

He’s already shared it with me, about why everything had happened the way it did and I’ve seen him and his friends in their other forms which was a little frightening. He explained why they exist and answers all of my questions. If only he would explain to Leah, then maybe we could set things right. He is so nice and handsome, but I still feel like Leah has a better claim on him. Maybe if she didn’t want him anymore, and as long as we could still be as close as sisters…

Sam suddenly burst through the trees, coming the opposite way I had been expecting.

“EMILY!” he shouted at me though I couldn’t tell if his words were meant to be harsh or simply filled with concern. He picked me up into an embrace that lifted my feet off the ground. “Where have you been? I told you to go home, not back here!”

“I was waiting for you to come back, Sam,” I explain. “I love Leah too you know; she’s still my cousin. Practically sister, although she apparently would not say the same anymore. You’ve hurt her you know. You need to just go back to her and forget me. I like you Sam, but you’re better off with her. She loves you so much. Please just go and give me my sister back. She hates me right now and I can’t live with that. Maybe someday, if she doesn’t want to be with you anymore than we—”

He lets go of me, not seeming to hear what I am saying and starts shaking. “Emily, that was something I needed to take care of on my own! You should have done as I’d asked! Leah won’t listen to a stinkin’ word I say. She doesn’t care. I love you, Emily. I need you, not her. I love her, but I’ve explained to you before; you are the one for me. Just deal with it ’cause I’m not going anywhere. It’s not like I get to control all of the . . . trashy circumstances. I know that it ‘s not fair for her. Life isn’t fair.” His words were half shouts, angry but I didn’t know if it was me or Leah that had him upset. I started backing away from Sam as the shaking grew stronger.

I yelled back, angry that Leah didn’t matter to him and I apparently didn’t either since he wasn’t listening to me. I was going to loose the only sister I had and it was all Sam’s fault. “Stop! Trashy circumstances? Is that what this is? Because to me it seem like you’re just acting to much like a Uley to know a good thing when you’ve got it. Leah was good to you and now you’re treating her like the last few years didn’t even happen. You’re so selfish! What about what everyone else wants? Or are you the only one who’s opinion matters? How can you be so mean to her? To me? You’re just like your father!” He takes a step toward me and I push him away, “I’ve heard the stories and—”

That’s when Sam lost it. His clothes exploded into a million pieces. His limbs seemed to reach out in every direction, his right paw catching my face on its way toward the forest floor. Sam’s sharp claws scrapped down the right side of my face and then my arm and shoulder. I cried out in pain and fell back towards the ground in shock.

It took him a moment to phase back—he seemed to be having trouble with it. Then in an instant, the monstrous wolf disappeared. He shouted my name again, this time his voice was for certain full of concern. Sam scooped me up into his warm arms and began running, murmuring words of comfort along the way.

A black fog threatened to engulf me, blurring my vision and making my head spin. I could feel warm liquid on my cheek and arm. My right eye closed and once it did, it wouldn’t open. I didn’t try to open it anyways because of the pain that came when I did. Instead I closed both of my eyes and focused on my other senses. I struggled to concentrate on Sam’s voice, on the gentle, steady rhythm of his foot falls. The smell of the forest around us, then the smell changed to home. I was faintly aware of when Sam climbed the steps to our porch and a minute later laid me on the couch. I could hear him talking to someone but as the warm trickled to my ear, I stopped listening, for a moment.

I was almost asleep before Sam hoisted me into his arms again and ran out the door. It was raining now. The soft, cold drips felt good on my skin. We had a car, but I guessed Sam thought it would be faster this way, and it probably would. Since he had first turned into a wolf, he could outrun most of the cars on the highway. Or so he told me. I never got to be with him when he was a wolf apart from one time. He said it was dangerous, and after what had just happened, I now believed him. I heard Jared, another wolf in Sam’s pack, join us but I couldn’t understand what he was saying. Sam was practically flying as he sprinted through the forest along the edge of the town. I began to drift to sleep again. I felt so tired.

“Sam. Tired. Stop running? Sleep?” I mumbled the words the best I could knowing they would probably be incoherent.

“No Em, don’t go to sleep. We’re almost there baby. I’m so sorry. Hang on,” Sam whispered more gentle words in my ear.

Then Sam and Jared spoke. I only made out a few words; sleep, angry and pain.

Sam slowed to a walk and then paused for a brief second. There was the sound of a door opening and then the voice of a woman quietly saying, “Come in! Put her on the couch Sam.”I recognized the voice as Sue Clearwater’s. She continued speaking in hushed tones, “I don’t know what I can do to help with my limited medical knowledge but I will do what I can. You really should take her to Forks. They really could help more than me.”

Sam laid me on the couch and someone pulled a blanket up over my legs. “You know I can’t do that. It would just make things worse.”

“You will take her if I say. If I can’t do enough then—”

“Then I will take her, ” Sam finished. “But please—” his voice was full of pain as he choked back tears. “Do what you can.”

And that’s when I fell asleep.
